At the age of 16, Maharaj made his first-class debut for KwaZulu-Natal in the 2006–07 season. In 2009–10, he received a promotion to the Dolphins squad. In two four-day matches against the Bangladesh Cricket Board Academy in April and May 2010, Maharaj traveled to Bangladesh with the South Africa Academy and claimed 13 wickets.
