Hat-tricks in IPL: A professional hat-trick is usually something that only the best bowlers in the world can do. But did you know that India’s “Hitman” Rohit Sharma has a hat-trick against Mumbai Indians, the team he would go on to lead to a record five titles?
Getting three batsmen out with three consecutive balls takes a lot of precision and focus. Yuvraj Singh, on the other hand, made it look easy when he scored two hat-tricks in one season.

The 19 hat tricks from the previous 13 IPL seasons are listed here
2008 (Lakshmipathy Balaji, Amit Mishra, Makhaya Ntini)
In the first year of the IPL, three players scored hat-tricks. Balaji made history when, against Punjab Kings, he was the first player to get a hat-trick in the cash-rich league (PBKS).
After Mishra got the first of his three IPL hat-tricks against the Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fast bowler Ntini also got a hat-trick against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
2009 (Yuvraj Singh (x2), Rohit Sharma)
The number of hat-tricks was the same in 2009 as it was in the first year, but it was not done by three different players.
Yuvraj, who plays for PBKS, scored two hat-tricks during the tournament. The first one was against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), even though they were losing. However, his second hat-trick against the Chargers helped his team win. Rohit was the second player in 2009 to get a hat-trick, and his name might be the oddest one on this list. Since the “Hitman” is known for his powerful hitting, not many people would have thought he would get a hat-trick. At the time, he was playing for Chargers. He got his hat-trick against MI, the team he would later lead to five IPL titles.
2010 (Praveen Kumar)
In 2010, there was only one hat-trick, which was scored by Kumar of RCB. It happened against Rajasthan Royals (RR), who were all out for 92 the night before. Bangalore was not scared and easily found the target.
2011 (Amit Mishra)
Mishra got his second hat-trick in 2011 against PBKS, making him the undisputed king of hat-tricks in the IPL. Then, Mishra used his magic with the ball to help the Chargers beat Punjab by 82 runs.
2012 (Ajit Chandila)
The 2012 IPL season, like the one before it, had only one hat-trick, which was scored by Chandila of RR against the Pune Warriors India (PWI). In a tight race to get into the playoffs, Chandila’s hat-trick helped Rajasthan defend its score of 170.
Later, the promising spinner was caught up in a spot-fixing scandal, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India banned him for life (BCCI).
2013 (Amit Mishra, Sunil Narine)
Mishra made news again in 2013 when he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He was the only player in the IPL to have three hat-tricks.
In the T20 extravaganza between KKR and Punjab, mystery spinner Sunil Narine got his first and only hat-trick, but it was for nothing.
2014 (Pravin Tambe, Shane Watson)
In the 2014 IPL, two hat-tricks were scored by players from the same team. Tambe’s leg spin against KKR was the first one. He helped get Kolkata’s chase off track, which gave Rajasthan a chance to win.
Watson got the second one against SRH, but it wasn’t enough because Hyderabad played very well and kept their score of 134 by bowling RR out for 102.
2016 (Axar Patel)
After the recently finished Test series between India and England, when Axar took an amazing 27 wickets in four Tests, he was the talk of the town.
In the 2016 IPL, he not only got a hat-trick, but he also got a four-for in just five balls against Gujarat Lions, which got a lot of attention (GL).
2017 (Samuel Badree, Andrew Tye and Jaydev Unadkat)
In 2017, three hat-tricks happened for only the second time in a single IPL season. Badree was the first person to take four wickets, but it didn’t help because RCB couldn’t defend a score of 142. Tye got GL’s second hat-trick against Rising Pune Supergiants by scoring three times (RPS). Against SRH, Unadkat took the last hat-trick of the season.
2019 (Sam Curran, Shreyas Gopal)
Curran of PBKS scored the first hat-trick of the 2019 season. This helped his team beat Delhi in a low-scoring game that was a real nail-biter.
Gopal’s hat-trick against RCB made him the 19th player in the IPL to get a hat-trick. The rain messed up the game, though.
2021 (Harshal Patel)
Harshal Patel got the first hat-trick of IPL 2021 while helping RCB beat Mumbai Indians for its first win of the second leg in UAE. The final score for Harshal was 4/15. He got the heads of Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, and Rahul Chahar, which was a big deal.
2022 (Yuzvendra Chahal)
Yuzvendra Chahal of the Rajasthan Royals got the first hat-trick of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season by taking out Shreyas Iyer, Pat Cummins, and Shivam Mavi in the 17th over.
This was Chahal’s first hat-trick in the IPL, and it brought his season total of wickets to 17.
