History

Back story:

The Indian Cricket League (ICL) was started in 2007 with the help of Zee Entertainment Enterprises. ICL was not recognized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC). The BCCI was also unhappy that some of its members were on the ICL executive board. In their own domestic competitions, the BCCI raised prize money and banned players from joining the ICL, which they viewed as rebellious. As a result, players were not allowed to join the ICL.

Establishment:

Immediately after India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, the BCCI announced the IPL. During the launch of the first season in April 2008, New Delhi held a “high-profile celebration.” Lalit Modi, who led the IPL campaign, explained the tournament’s structure, prize money, franchise revenue scheme, and squad composition restrictions. Top two clubs in the IPL would qualify for the Champions League Twenty20 that year, and a seven-member committee of former Indian players and BCCI officials would govern the tournament. It has been in development for two years and was not a knee-jerk response to the ICL, according to Modi. There were similarities between the league’s format and that of the Premier League and the NBA.

The owners of the new league were determined by a $400 million auction held on January 24, 2008. At the auction’s end, the winning bidders and teams’ cities were announced — Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mohali, and Mumbai. A total of $723.59 million was paid for the franchises. 2008 was the year when the ICL collapsed. There have been 166 terrorist attacks in Mumbai in 2008 that led to 238 serious injuries and 166 deaths. Pakistani players are banned from the league as a result of these attacks. After the heinous attack outraged Indians, Pakistani players were banned from the IPL.

Extensions and discontinuances:

Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala joined the league before the 2011 season. It cost Rendezvous Sports World $333.3 million to buy Kochi, and Sahara Adventure Sports Group $370 million to buy Pune. The Kochi Tuskers Kerala team was dismissed on 11 November 2011 for violating BCCI guidelines. On 14 September 2012, the BCCI disbanded the 2009 champion Deccan Chargers due to a lack of new owners. Hyderabad franchise auction was won by Sun TV Network on October 25. Play would be between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

A financial issue with the BCCI caused Pune Warriors India to leave the IPL on 21 May 2013. A bank guarantee was not obtained by the BCCI on October 26, 2013, which resulted in the franchise being canceled.

Match rules:

IPL games use TV timeouts, so each team has a set amount of time to finish its innings. In some cases, umpires may abuse this right, resulting in teams getting in trouble. Two and a half minutes are allotted to each team during a strategic timeout. Between the sixth and ninth overs, the team bowling must use theirs, and the team batting must use theirs between the thirteenth and sixteenth overs.

Cash awards:

In 2020, 53 crores or US$6.6 million will be paid as prize money in the IPL season. It is the same amount as the winning team in 2020, which is 21 crores or US$2.6 million. Runners-up and runners-up received 12.5 crores (1.6 million dollars) and 875 crores (1.1 million dollars). The team that came in 4rth position also won 8.75 crore (US$1.1 million). Neither of the other teams receives prize money. The rules for the IPL say that each player must get half of the prize money.
