The Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) were a franchise cricket team based in Pune, Maharashtra, India, which played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2016 and 2017. Steve Smith captained the team and Stephen Fleming coached it. Their last game was against the Mumbai Indians, and they lost by one run.

RPS (Rising Pune Supergiants) was a temporary franchise cricket team based in Pune, Maharashtra. It was the second team from Maharashtra after the Mumbai Indians. As a result of illegal betting by their owners, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended for two seasons.
History of Rising Pune Supergiants
2016
Rising Pune Supergiants won their first game of the season by 9 wickets against the defending champions, Mumbai Indians. However, they lost their next four games – to Gujarat Lions, Kings XI Punjab, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Kolkata Knight Riders. Supergiants beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 34 runs thanks to Ashok Dinda’s inclusion in their 6th game. At the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, they lost to the Gujarat Lions and Mumbai Indians. Supergiants won only five games out of 14 in 2016, and won just two of their seven home games – four at MCA Stadium in Pune and three at ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vishakhapatnam. In the IPL points table, they finished seventh.
2017
The franchise then changed their name to Rising Pune Supergiant on 26 March 2017, removing the’s’. After the auction, MS Dhoni was sacked and Steve Smith was appointed captain. Ravichandran Ashwin was out with a sports hernia, so Washington Sundar replaced him. At the auction, RPS bought Ben Stokes for $14.5 million, making him the most expensive overseas player in IPL history.
